In 2009 Bryson was awarded his PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Newcastle, Australia, where he also taught for three years. His thesis, 'Chasing the Unwritable Book', explored how identity is shaped by mental illness and the fictional possibilities it presents to the author - with a particular focus on autobiographical fiction.
