BiographyHistory

'Originally from Perth, Doug worked as a teacher at Yirara College in Alice Springs, followed by three years as the Adult Educator at the community of Walungurru (also known as Kintore). While in Central Australia he began learning the Western Desert Language and started studying linguistics.This led him to take up a position as Senior Linguist at the Yamaji Language Centre in Geraldton, WA. In this position he worked with speakers of a number of languages of the Murchison-Gascoyne region including: Wajarri, Badimaya, Nhanda, Malgana, Warriyangka, Ngarlawangka and Wanmala.

Following this he worked on a PhD in linguistics at the ANU, writing a description of Wutung, a Papuan language spoken on the north coast of PNG. Doug joined AIATSIS in 2010 as Research Fellow Language Programs. He is co-manager (with Kazuko Obata) of the National Indigenous Languages Survey and will be running a series of workshops on endangered language work.'
