BiographyHistory

Roland Hoffman was the son of Robert Bismarck Hoffman, a West Australian journalist who was killed in World War I. Roland was also a journalist and had a distinguished career in Melbourne and Sydney. Prior to his enlistment, he became a founding editor of AIF News, the first army newspaper of World War II.

Enlisting on 20 October 1939, Hoffman was commissioned into the 6th Division Intelligence Corp. In 1941, he was captured in Crete by the German army and subsequently taken to Stalag 383, a prisoner of war camp in Hohenfels, Germany. After his repatriation from Germany, Hoffman was sent to London where, at the age of 38, he died as a result of his experiences in Stalag 383. He was buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, London.
