Kidd originally trained as a primary teacher, although she also worked in high schools. She taught English to Non English Speaking Background children in Melbourne. She also acted on the stage. Kidd subsequently worked in Greece, England and Spain, before returning to Australia. After living variously in the Snowy Mountains, on Phillip Island, and in the Victorian Alps, she settled in Sydney. As a result of her teaching experience, Kidd wrote with the intention of reflecting the lives of children from a variety of cultures, and their experiences in negotiating cultural differences.
