BiographyHistory

John Maxwell began publishing in London around 1843. He published a range of popular and literary periodicals, all containing serialised fiction. Much of Maxwell's ouput was the work of his wife, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, a writer of historical and sensational novels.

The firm became J. and R. Maxwell in 1879, when Maxwell's sons Jack and Robert took over. It ceased when Jack died in 1889.
