McAdam, a Canadian-born writer, is the son of a Canadian diplomat and grew up in Hong Kong, Denmark, England and Barbados as well as Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. He studied classics at the University of Toronto and at McGill University, and received his PhD in English Literature from Cambridge University in England. McAdam lived in Australia but has since moved back to Montreal.
