BiographyHistory

A physician and author, John Le Gay Brereton established himself as a prominent figure in Sydney after emigrating from England in 1859. Besides setting up in medical practice, he established a Turkish bath, gave public lectures on various subjects, and published several volumes of poetry in the colony. Brereton was a follower of Swedenborgianism and became a leader of the New Jerusalem church in Sydney. Much of his poetry reflects his religious beliefs. (ADB)
