BiographyHistory

A Roman Catholic priest, Dixon was arrested in 1798 under suspicion of involvement in the Irish rebellion. He was unjustly convicted and transported to New South Wales on the Friendship, arriving in January 1800. In 1803 Governor King granted Dixon permission to practice as a priest and conduct services for Roman Catholic convicts. However, following unrest among Irish convicts, permission was withdrawn in 1804.

Dixon continued to conduct services privately (as official records of baptisms and marriages attest). In 1808 Dixon returned to Ireland where he took up work as a priest in Crossabeg.
