David Hicks was captured in Afghanistan in December 2001 and was held without charge in an American prisoner of war camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In a plea bargain in March 2007, Hicks was given a nine month sentence in exchange for a year-long gag order and a waiver of rights to appeal. His capture and incarceration became a 'cause celebre' in Australia and the subject of drama, poetry and creative writing.
