Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Department of History, Flinders University, Haines has written several books outside the scope of AustLit, on early Australian immigration and the conditions which surrounded it. These include Emigration and the Labouring Poor (1997), Charles Trevelyan and the Great Irish Famine (2004) and Bound for South Australia (2004).
