Ruth Sansom trained as a teacher in Hobart and taught in Tasmania for four years before travelling to England in 1934 on a scholarship to study the teaching and speaking of verse at the London Speech Institute. She also studied phonetics with Daniel Jones at University College, London. She married
Clive Sansom on 19 June 1937 and joined the Society of Friends the following year. Ruth Sansom taught in schools, conducted in-service courses for teachers and participated in speech festivals and poetry recitals in Southern England until 1949. At the end of that year she returned to Tasmania with her husband. In 1951 they established the Tasmanian Education Department's Speech Education Centre and became known nationally as speech educators and broadcasters. She edited
Rhythm Rhymes (London 1964) and became increasingly interested in mysticism.
