BiographyHistory

Stuart Glover grew up in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, where his family has resided since the mid-nineteenth century. He has worked as a freelance journalist and as an assessor for Australian publishing houses and literary prizes. As a researcher, Glover has published on Brisbane's cultural identity, the history of Australian publishing, and literary institutions.

Glover's roles in the arts industry include

  • Founding Director of the Brisbane Writers Festival
  • Manager for Writing at Arts Queensland,
  • Inaugural Director of QPIX (the Queensland Screen Development Centre)
  • Deputy Chair of the Queensland Writers Centre
  • Founding Chair of Multi-Media Art Asia-Pacific
  • Chair of Q Music (the Queensland Music Industry Association)
  • Member of the Queensland Theatre Company Board
  • Member of the Management Committee of the National Young Writers Festival
  • Founding Chair of the Queensland Literary Awards

He has also been a member of the Literature Board of the Australia Council and of the management committee of both Island literary magazine and the National Young Writers Festival.

In 2017 he became Director of the Centre for Critical and Creative Writing in the School of Communication and Arts at the University of Queensland. His research and teaching interests lie in publishing and print culture.

He writes creative non-fiction regularly for the newspapers, for ABC Radio National, and for little magazines–including McSweeney’s, Griffith Review, The Lifted Brow, Island, and Artlink. He has published short fiction in a number of anthologies and likewise co-edited a number. He is the publisher of Bumf, a literary website specialising in pleasingly short works.
