BiographyHistory

Cleary was well known in the US Midwest as a humourist and a writer of realistic, sometimes naturalistic, stories about the settlement period of the West. The serial Desperate Deceit, however, is a sensational romance set in the UK. Her best writing appeared between 1895 and 1899, years of extreme financial and emotional stress in her life.
