BiographyHistory

Hawkes' early education was undertaken in Catholic schools where she developed an attachment to Coleridge, Yeats and Shakespeare. In 2008 she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Gender and Cultural Studies, University of Sydney, titled 'Aqua Mater : Towards a Genealogy of the Impossible.'

She has taught in the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney, and  in sociology at The Australian National University.. Hawke has been an activist for Peace and Social Justice. Her experience as a bus driver undertaken while supporting herself as a university student, inspired her book, Depot Girl.
