A young girl marries before she knows of love, but falls in love with her husband's cousin. Her husband dies soon after but his evil father extorts a promise through his son that she will not marry again. Only after the father's death does a servant reveal a letter releasing her from the vow - and a true marriage follows. Probably US. (PB)
1 Miss Flint's Mistake Merley Mist , 1889 single work short story romance
— Appears in: The Australian Journal , August vol. 24 no. 291 1889; (p. 665-666) Blighted romance. An old maid's determination to rectify the mistakes of her youth persuades her to encourage her adopted daughter to marry the son of her early love. She inteferes in the girl's love for a city clerk, persuading her to marry the local youth. After the ceremony the girl discovers her lover's faithfulness and disappears forever rather than live hypocritically with her husband. (PB)
