BiographyHistory

Born in the village of Larikha in central Siberia, Vladimir Petrov defected from Russia on 4 April 1954. His wife, Evdokia Petrov (q.v.), defected under dramatic circumstances in Darwin nine days later. The Petrovs were granted asylum, Australian status and new identites in 1956. Assuming the names of Sven and Maria Allyson, the Petrovs settled in suburban Melbourne. The Petrov Affair caused a Royal Commission and far reaching effects in Australian political and cultural life.
