Sue Abbey began working at University of Queensland Press (UQP) in 1981, training as an editor. From 1988-2002, she was Poetry Editor at the Press and as Senior Editor, Abbey managed the Black Australian Writers list from its inception in 1990 until she left UQP in January 2005. She also worked with established and emerging authors across the spectrum of the UQP's publications.
More recently, Abbey has worked as a freelance consultant in writing and publishing and freelance commissions include masterclasses in writing, lectures in publishing, judging literary competitions, and advising government and publishers.
She serves and advises on the Boards of Queensland Writers Centre, Brisbane Writers Festival, and the Aboriginal Studies Press, and has judged in Brisbane City Council's One Book Many Brisbane's competition. She is also the founder of black&write!
