BiographyHistory

American short story writer and novelist. His acclaimed novel of teenage angst, The Catcher in the Rye (1951), was banned in Australia by Customs officials in 1956 without reference to the Literature Censorship Board. After a public outcry at the ban in 1957, it was referred to the Board and released.
