James Taylor was the minister of the Collins Street Baptist Church, Melbourne, from 1857 until 1868.
Mervyn Himbury describes Taylor as 'a pioneer in the world of religious journalism' in the colony of Victoria. He edited The Christian Times for a short period in the late 1850s, and then established and edited The Christian Pioneer and The Australian Evangelist. In 1868, Taylor was accused of 'immoral conduct' and expelled from the church. The events surrounding this episode were widely reported in The Argus and The Age.
