Queensland-born Laurel Martyn danced in England with the Vic-Wells Ballet in the 1930s before returning to Australia in 1938. Shortly after her return she joined the emerging Borovansky Ballet and danced and created leading roles with Borovansky until 1946. In 1946 she established Ballet Guild, a company which later performed under the name Victorian Ballet Company and Ballet Victoria. Martyn has also developed a specific method for teaching dance especially to children.
