BiographyHistory

Born at Mallee Cliffs, near Wentworth, Katherine McNicol married Herbert Hughes at the age of fifteen, and the couple had ten children. They lived in the Bordertown/Keith area of South Australia, moving to Queensland in 1907, their eighth child being born en route.

Although she must have left school at an early age her writing shows a good grasp of the English language and a knowledge of Greek mythology. She was remembered by her family as someone who was always writing, and letting the cares of the world go by her.

She published a book of poems and a novel, and contributed poems and stories to various journals. After her death her daughter published a selection of her verse.
