BiographyHistory

Newspaper editor and proprietor George Mott migrated to Australia from England as an unassisted migrant in 1853. On his arrival in Melbourne he took up work with the Argus and later with the Melbourne Morning Herald. In 1855, Mott 'bought an interest in a Beechworth newspaper and in October 1856 established the Border Post at Albury, New South Wales'. Several years later, he added the Federal Standard in nearby Chiltern to his stable and, in 1869, he acquired the Hamilton Spectator.

From 1885 to 1894, Mott was the Melbourne manager of Gordon & Gotch (q.v.) and, in 1888, he began the Kew Mercury. Mott's Reminiscences of a Victorian Journalist was published in the Mercury's pages in 1895.

According to the Australian Dictionary of Biography, Mott's sons 'established newspapers in Western Australia, regional Victoria and in suburban Melbourne; Hamilton [Mott] started the Border Morning Mail (Albury) which, as the Border Mail, was still in the hands of his descendants a century later'.
