BiographyHistory

'Dr Ann Stephen is an art historian and senior curator, University Art Gallery and Art Collection, the University of Sydney. She has curated and published on many aspects of the visual arts including such titles as The Necessity of Australian Art with Ian Burn, Nigel Lendon and Charles Merewether (Power Publications, 1988); Pirating the Pacific: Images of Trade and Travel (Powerhouse Publishing 1993); Vision of a Republic: The work of Lucien Henry (Powerhouse Publishing, 2001), which was awarded the Art Association of Australia & NZ (AAANZ), Catalogue Prize 2002; and On looking at looking: The Art and Politics of Ian Burn (The Miegunyah Press, 2006). She is a member of the Council of The Australiana Fund.

'Between 2003 and 2006 she worked on an Australian Research Council grant with Andrew McNamara and Philip Goad, co-editing Modernism & Australia: Documents on Art, Design and Architecture 1917-1967 (The Miegunyah Press, 2006) awarded the AAANZ Book Prize, which is now in its third edition, and Modern Times: The untold story of modernism in Australia (The Miegunyah Press with Powerhouse Publishing, 2008).
