Silvia Cuevas Morales came to Australia from Chile with her family in 1975. She became an Australian citizen in 1983. She completed her secondary and tertiary education in Melbourne, and after graduating with a BA (Honours) she taught Spanish language and Latin American literature at Monash University (1990-1995). Cuevas Morales received her Master of Arts degree from La Trobe University in 1994 and in 1996 she taught at Victoria University.
Cuevas Morales began writing at the age of sixteen. Her work has received several awards including first and second prize for her stories Una Noche Cualquiera and Angel Angelita, in the First National Spanish Short Story Competition organised by CELAS (1986); second prize in the same competition in 1988 for Anita la Roca y Su Luna; first prize for Desde el Exilio at the first Latin American Melbourne Sings to Violeta Parra Song Festival (1989); special mention for winning second place for poetry and essay in the Sixth National Spanish Literary Competition (1992) organised by La Peña. Her poetry has been published in several periodicals including: Westerly, Womanspeak, Nosotras, Libra and Woorilla.
Cuevas Morales has been a member of the Fellowship of Australian Writers and Germinal (Latin American Poets). She has read her work on radio: Angel Angelita [Angel, Little Angel], 3CR Radio, 1986; Una Noche Cualquiera [On Any Night], 3EA Radio, 1986.
In 1999 Cuevas Morales went to live in Spain where she continues to write and work as an editor, literary translator and freelance journalist. Her weblog has been archived on PANDORA.
