BiographyHistory

Writer, playwright, screenwriter, reviewer and director.

Christopher Thompson was the artistic director of St Martins Youth Arts Centre in Melbourne from 1988 to 1996 and a founding member of the artistic directorate of Hot House Theatre in Albury/Wodonga between 1996 and 2002. He has directed arts and theatre festivals for Melbourne University and Monash University and was artistic director of Melbourne University's Union House Theatre. Thompson's career has also seen him teach in secondary schools and lecture at the Australian Catholic University and the Victorian Arts Centre. Many of his plays are written for a young audience and he has published in the young adult genre as well as reviewed for the periodical Viewpoint: On Books for Young Adults.

Thompson's industry associations include board membership of various organisations, notably the Victorian Writers' Centre, the Arts Industry Council (Victoria) and the National Board of the Australian Script Centre.

The Sadness of Mister Saisson 2011 single work drama 'A little orphan girl, an ocker opera singer, a wild Gypsy, a lonely Giraffe, a sad old man and an eccentric aviator. What do they all have in common and why are they travelling together to the Great Paris Exposition of 1889?

'The answer is at the top of the Eiffel Tower, if they can get there before Mister Menage and the gendarmes catch them. The Sadness of Mister Saisson is almost a true story...except that none of it happened this way.'

Two men stumble into an army base in the middle of the desert. While most of the Australian and American troops are out on manoeuvres, the base is guarded by a single, disenchanted soldier. Learning that the men are seeking a forgotten fortune in gold bars, hidden under the base after World War II, she throws her lot in with them, rather than face her coming court martial. But one of the men has his own agenda.
