Peter Tahourdin was born in Bramdean, He graduated from Trinity College of Music, London in 1952, and became a freelance composer. Tahourdin came to Australia in 1964 to take up the position of visiting composer at the University of Adelaide, where he later established a course in electronic music after receiving a Master of Music from Toronto University in Canada. In 1973, he joined the Faculty of Music at the University of Melbourne, and remained there until 1988, when he retired to take up full time composition.
Tahourdin's works include symphonies, chamber, and instrumental music, and also operatic and choral music, including King Oswald's Victory (1970). He was a foundation member of the Melbourne-based Chimera Conceptions group, an association founded in 1985 with the aim of presenting new music-theatre works. Tahourdin's other stage works include one-act operas Inside Information (1955), and Parrot Pie (1973), the latter an educational piece for children. He also wrote an entertainment for children and adults, Graffiti.
