Stuart Barrow has described himself as 'a bureaucrat by profession, a writer by inclination and an editor by accident' (Phenomenon 2005). Originally from Adelaide he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Adelaide and later undertook a Ph D at the Australian National University. After completing his degree he remained in Canberra, working for the public service in various capacities, including positions as an examiner at the Australian patents office and as an Assistant Director for the National Health and Medical Research Council (to 2010).
Barrow's short fiction has been published in the Canberra Speculative Fiction anthologies Elswhere (2003), Encounters (2004) and Gastronomicon (2005, also as editor), as well as in Heaven and Hell (2002). Stories have also appeared in Eureka Street, Fables and Reflections, and Andromedia Spaceways Inflight Magazine, while also serving as editor for the latter magazine on at least two occasions (2005/2006).
A long time member of Phenomenon, the Canberra-based roleplaying game convention, Barrow has contributed numerous stories. His games, which often have a comic bent, include: The Lake District Needlework and Adventure Society, The Mask and the Moonlight, the PG Wodehouse-inspired Last Man Standing, and Pack. Games written in collaboration with other people include Don't Know Where, Don't Know When, Uptime Girl and Antiques Roadshow of Doom!
