BiographyHistory

Better known as a surveyor than as a poet, Hope came to Australia as a boy with his family in 1851 and lived in Macclesfield, SA. In 1869 he obtained a Surveyor's Licence and surveyed several northern agricultural towns of South Australia. By 1880 he was living in Norwood, SA. He was one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society (S. A. Branch) and the Astronomical Society.

He was responsible for several publications on surveying, and is best-known for his Handbook for Government Surveyors (1880) and Geographical Nomenclature of South Australia (1893).
