The Reverend D. C. Harris was one of ten children of a Methodist preacher. In his early days he worked on the Western Australian goldfields, and took services as a local preacher.

Harris began his ministry in 1899, his circuit including South Australian country towns and Adelaide suburbs. After his retirement he did deputation work for the South Australian Temperance Alliance, and in his later days lived at Clarence Park, South Australia, publishing a number of books of religious verse and some books for children on the Christian life.
