1 y separately published work icon Untold Story of William Shum : Editor of Australian Home Beautiful 1926-1946 Sue Walker , Roseville : Beagle Press , 2024 28222926 2024 single work biography 'Walker tells the story of her magazine editor grandfather against the larger backdrop of Australian history and cultural growth. William Shum was a pioneer in Australian magazines, as founding editor of (The) New Idea in 1902, and then Australian Home Beautiful in 1926. As founding editor of New Idea and then Australian Home Beautiful (roles he held for over four decades from 1902-1946), William Shum had an extraordinary influence on people's lives through the crucial years when modern Australia was being formed. His impact on the homes, gardens and lives of people from all walks of life was immense, yet he remains an unknown figure. Shum led his readers through a time of great change. He encouraged people to break with traditional thinking about their homes and gardens and be open to ideas more appropriate to a new country. Australia, as we know it today, was taking shape, and Australian Home Beautiful led the way. Beautifully illustrated, with rich visual support for the text, the book contains many of Home Beautiful's memorable hand painted covers, in addition to some of Shum's wonderfully spontaneous photographs of family life in the early decades of the 20th century.' 'Hans Heysen is one of the giants of Australian art who transformed the way we see the Australian landscape during the first two decades of Federation. Back from four years of study in Europe at the end of 1903, he achieved an astronomical success within twelve months of his return. Two major works were acquired by State Galleries and he was awarded the Wynne Prize, the first of nine times. In December 1904 he married Sallie Bartels who became his perfect partner. They moved to Hahndorf in 1908 and in 1912 acquired The Cedars, a house and property which proved to be the ideal home for Heysen the painter and his large family.

'Heysen's art is the result of great technical skill and his passion and understanding of the Australian landscape. What to others was 'the bush', for Heysen it was the miraculous and mystical essence of nature. He was inspired by light and the landscape of Hahndorf and the Adelaide Hills, which he transformed into an Arcadian vision that can still haunt us with its sense of timeless beauty. Not only did he produce a range of masterpieces such as Red Gold (1912); Droving into the Light (1921) and The Three Gums (1921), but he also ventured into the Flinders Ranges in 1926, where he discovered a primordial landscape. Some of his finest works are the result of his many visits to the interior of the continent, which captured his imagination to the end of his life.

'The author, Lou Klepac, has had a long association with Hans Heysen. When he became Curator of Paintings at the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1966, Hans Heysen was still on the Art Gallery Board of Trustees. He invited Klepac to The Cedars and showed him through the studio. He has seen all the major exhibitions devoted to Heysen since 1966 and in 1988 he organised a comprehensive exhibition, 'Hans Heysen Drawings and Watercolours' for the S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney.

'The book has 149 plates, with numerous illustrations and photographs, and with special sections devoted to major paintings. It includes detailed biographical notes on the artist as well as informative quotes from the artist's letters. ' (Publication summary)

1 1 y separately published work icon Russell Drysdale : The Drawings Lou Klepac , Roseville : Beagle Press , 2012 Z1881101 2012 single work biography

'The year 2012 is the centenary of the birth of Russell Drysdale, one of the greatest Australian painters of the twentieth century. This book celebrates his achievement as a draughtsman. Coming into prominence during the 1940s amid the cultural and social changes precipitated by the Second World War, Drysdale initiated a new vision of Australian landscape which replaced the pastoralism of the Heidelberg School. Together with Sidney Nolan, Drysdale transformed Australian painting providing a penetrating view more in line with modern ideas and perceptions. He revealed the vastness, emptiness and dryness of the landscape and its effects on the people who survived in those sparse, arid conditions. Drawing has been vital in Drysdale's career. It was when passing the time drawing while in hospital that his talent was noticed, which led to him studying at the Bell School and putting down the foundation for his future life as a painter. Drysdale is known for a series of highly imaginative and wonderful paintings such as The Drover's Wife, The Cricketers, West Wyalong and some exceptional paintings of Aboriginal figures, but he was also a prolific draughtsman, for whom drawing was the basis of all his work. This book covers the entire period of his career; it includes both working drawings, drawings made for their own sake as well as quotations from the artist. It also delves into the nature of drawing itself and the changes that this discipline has undergone during the twentieth century.

This book is based on an exhibition of Drysdale drawings organised by Lou Klepac in conjunction with Carrick Hill, Adelaide, [South Australia] beginning at S.H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney, [New South Wales] then showing in Carrick Hill followed by Mornington Peninsula Regional gallery in Victoria...' (Trove record)
