Nichols is a former journalist who works as an academic, lecturing lectures in urban planning at the University of Melbourne.
Nichols is a regular contributor to The Age, Rolling Stone, Meanjin and The Big Issue.
Nichols's other works include The Go-Betweens (1997), a history of the music group of the same name.
