After an early life and education in England Bradfield moved to Germany in the late 1930s to work as a governess to a Jewish family in Dresden. Along with the children in her care, she escaped Kristallnacht and found her way to Berlin. She remained in Germany for some time smuggling goods out of the country. During World War II Bradfield worked with the RAF and spent time at Bletchley Park assisting in the deciphering of the enigma code.
Bradfield migrated to Australia in 1956. She developed business interests in the newly developing motel industry. Based in Canberra, Bradfield continued to travel internationally. She was a member of the Society of Friends and a gifted linguist.
