Notes

  • In about 1856, Jacob Richard Clarke bought out his business partner, W. P. Woolcott, continuing their book and music selling and publishing business under his own name. Clarke became a leader in the field of music publishing in particular, and broadened his business to include artworks and photographs. Although he was an influential publisher with important connections in the social and political elite of the day, Clarke went bankrupt after over-stocking his shop in anticipation of increased demand during the International Exhibition of 1879. He was unable to recover financially and went bankrupt a second time in 1885 (ADB).
