BiographyHistory

Eva Marks was a child living in Vienna at the time of Kristallnacht. After Hitler's annexation of Austria, her family lived in Riga, holding German passports identifying them as Jews. Following the German invasion, Marks and other female members of her family were transported to a Soviet gulag in Siberia. They were eventually released in 1947 and returned to Vienna. Over sixty members of Eva's family died in the Holocaust.

Marks moved to Australia to be re-united with her father. After her marriage, her husband's career led to residencies in Britain, Canada, the USA and finally a return to Australia. In 1990 Marks joined a group named the Child Survivors of the Holocaust. She served as its treasurer for twelve years. She has also worked as assistant to the Curator of the Jewish Holocaust Museum and Research Centre, Melbourne.
