The Australian Churchman was a publication of the Church of England in New South Wales. It was established following a Synod session at which some clerical and lay members of the Synod 'expressed a wish that a weekly newspaper should be established for circulation chiefly amongst families professing to belong to the Church of England, but containing matter of sufficiently general character to be interesting to ordinary newspaper readers.'

The newspaper's aim was to 'present to our readers a weekly summary of the most interesting events – English, Foreign, and Colonial – as seen through the eyes of an Englishman or a Churchman, together with extracts from home, foreign, and colonial publications, interspersed with original letters and articles relative to our social, educational, and religious progress.'
