Louise West was born into a family who ran a circus. Her family moved to Indo-China when she was four, and joined a circus there. They returned to Australia when Louise was eleven years old, and she remembers having great difficulty at that time catching up with her neglected schooling.
She was Vice President of the Aborigines' Progressive Association in 1965.
