Anne Morgan was the second child in a family of eight siblings. In order to evade the family's nightly mountain of washing up, she used to volunteer to put her younger brothers to bed and read to them. This suited her admirably, as it allowed her to get a feel for the voice, plot, character, settings and humour of many great children's books, as well as to enjoy the shared experience of reading aloud.

Anne qualified as a secondary English and Drama teacher and taught in Tasmania, on remote settlements in the Northern Territory, and, briefly, in China. She has also been a professional actor, touring schools in outback Queensland. After a year in Europe, she returned to Tasmania to complete a Master of Education degree. She then worked as a public servant.

After her two children were born, she not only read to them, but began writing children's stories for them as well. She has also written poetry.

In 2004 she moved to Perth, Western Australia, to complete a PhD in Writing at Edith Cowan University where she was a member of the Fremantle based Out of the Asylum writers' group (q.v.) . After the completion of her PhD she returned to Tasmania.
