Professor Eric Richards has worked in the Department of History, Faculty of Social Sciences at Flinders University, South Australia. He was a Research Affiliate of the Research School of Social Sciences, Institute of Advance Studies, Australian National University from 2002 to 2005 and Adjunct Professor of History at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, in 2004.
His major historical publications, as author or editor, include The Leviathan of Wealth: The Sutherland Fortune in the Industrial Revolution (1973), The Last Scottish Food Riots (1982), A History of the Highland Clearances: Vol I, Agrarian Transformation and the Evictions, 1745-1886 (1982), which won the Book Prize of the Scottish Arts Council, A History of the Highland Clearances: Vol II, Emigration, Protest, Reasons (1985) The Flinders History of South Australia (two volumes, 1986 and 1987), Cromartie, Highland Life 1650-1914 (with Monica Clough 1989), Poor Australian Immigrants in the Nineteenth Century (1991), Visible Women: Female Immigrants in Colonial Australia, Canberra (1995), The Australian Immigrant in the Twentieth Century (1998) Patrick Sellar and the Highland Clearances (Scottish History Book of the Year, 1999), The Highland Clearances: People, Landlords and Rural Turmoil (2000), Britannia's Children: Emigration from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland Since 1600 (2004), Speaking to Immigrants: Oral Testimony and the History of Australian Immigration (2002), Australian Journal of Irish Studies (2002) and New Zealand Books (2003). Richards' Desintation Australia: Migration to Australia Since 1901 (2008) won the Community Relations Commission Award in the 2009 New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards.
