One of the most important and most successful American pulp magazines, Short Stories ran for almost 70 years with a total output of 1114 issues. During that time it was published by six different publishers. These were:
- The Current Literature Publishing Company (1890-1904)
- The Short Stories Company, Ltd. (1904-1910)
- Doubleday (1910-1937)
- Short Stories, Inc. (1937-1954)
- Codel Publishing Company (1956-1957)
- American Short Stories Corporation (1957-1959)
For the last six years the magazine shrank to a digest format before being expand briefly, to a slick men's magazine - initially as Short Stories: A Man's Magazine (1957-1958) and finally as Short Stories for Men (1959).
Between Volume 82 Number 4 (October 1914) and Volume 84 Number 1 (July 1915) the magazine was known as Short Stories with Keith’s House Plans. During this period it included a 16-page section of house plans by Walter J. Keith. Although the final number retained the title there was no "Keith's House Plans" section included.
