BiographyHistory

Irene McCormack grew up on a wheat and sheep farm and received her schooling from the Sisters of St Joseph. She entered the Sisters of St Joseph in 1957 and After many years of teaching in Australia, she was sent by her Order to be a gospel presence among the people of Huasahuasi, a poor mountain village in Peru. On May 21st 1991 a separatist group known as Shining Path invaded the village and subjected Irene and four local men to a sham trial in the village square and subsequently executed them.
