One of Australia's leading speculative fiction cover illustrators, Nick Stathopoulos works in a variety of styles including traditional and digital painting, storyboards and conceptual art, set painting, sculpting and scriptwriting. During his career he has also designed film and television productions, worked on commercials and music video clips (his clients including Fleetwood Mac and Crowded House), acted as an art director, painted cycloramas, drawn storyboards and built props, and been employed as a background artist for Hanna Barbera and Disney Corp. Stathopoulos 's illustrations can be seen on the covers of books by Terry Dowling, Ian Irvine, Josephine Pennicott, Jack Dann, and young adult fiction writer John Marsden.
Among his career achievements are a Penguin Television Award for Art Direction and eight Ditmars. In 1999 he was nominated for a Hugo Award for his professional SF art, and was nominated for a British SF Association Award for his cover of the anthology Dreaming Down Under. Stathopoulos was also a finalist for the 2003 Archibald Art Prize for portraiture - his entry being a painting of Mr Squiggle and his creator, Norman Hetherington.
