'When Catherine's lover dies suddenly, she has no-one to turn to - their affair had been disguised from their colleagues and his family - except her work. A middle-aged curator in a London museum, Catherine is given a very particular project by the perceptive head of her department: a box of intricate clockwork parts that appear to be the remains of a nineteenth century automaton - a beautifully made mechanical bird.

'When she discovers that the box also contains the diary of the man who commissioned the machine, she is partially rescued from one obsession by another - who were Henry Brandling and the mysterious, visionary clockmaker he hired to make a gift for his absent son? And what was the end result that now sits in pieces in her studio?

'The Chemistry of Tears is both wildly entertaining and deeply moving, a portrait of love and loss that is simultaneously delicate and anarchic. At its heart is an image only the masterful Peter Carey could breath such life into - an object made of equal parts magic, art and science, a delight that contains the seeds of our age's downfall.' 5 124 y separately published work icon Benang : From the Heart Kim Scott , ( trans. Pierre Girard )expression Arles : Actes Sud , 2002 Z135862 1999 single work novel (taught in 31 units) 'Oceanic in its rhythms and understanding, brilliant in its use of language and image, moving in its largeness of spirit, compelling in its narrative scope and style, Benang is a novel of celebration and lament, of beginning and return, of obliteration and recovery, of silencing and of powerful utterance. Both tentative and daring, it speaks to the present and a possible future through stories, dreams, rhythms, songs, images and documents mobilised from the incompletely acknowledged and still dynamic past.' 5 The True Story of Spit MacPhee James Aldridge , ( trans. Pierre Girard with title La Veritable Histoire de Spit MacPhee ) Paris : Librairie Générale Française , 1988 1986 extract novel (The True Story of Spit MacPhee)
— Appears in: The Australian Literary Magazine , 29-30 March 1986; (p. 1-2)
The people of St. Helen are concerned for young Spit MacPhee. Spit lives a hand to mouth existence with his eccentric grandfather, Fyle MacPhee, in an old shanty on the banks of the Murray River. When old Fyle dies the townspeople seize the opportunity to do something about the vagabond Spit. He finds himself the subject of a dramatic court case which polarises the religious and moral attitudes of a typical Australian country town in the 1930s. Yet, such is the strength of young Spit's character that, when the truth about his life with his grandfather is revealed, no one is left unchanged. (Source: Trove)
