A division of Hugh Hefner's HMH Publishing Company (later Playboy Enterprises) Playboy Press was set up to reprint material from the Playboy magazine in hardcover book form. Hefner also established Playboy Paperbacks to publish mass market books. In 1979 the company announced that it would also publish science fiction titles. In 1982 the publishing division was sold to Berkley-Jove subsidiary of Putnam Publishing Group.
Another division of MHM/Playboy Inc, The Playboy Book Club, had more than 100,000 members in 1980.
