BiographyHistory

Albert Boni and Horace Liveright founded this reprint publisher. Modern Library reprints became successful because of their low price and faux leather binding. They added original fiction to the list. In 1925 Liveright (who had bought out Boni's interest) was heavily in debt. Employee Bennett Cert bought Liveright out. Cert was joined by Donald Klopfer. The company diversified and expanded; eventually the name of the firm was changed to Random House. Modern Library became an imprint of Random House; a paperback line was added in 1955.
