BiographyHistory

An article in Australian Geographic, which also includes interview material with Tambo's descendants, identifies him as of the Wulguru clan on Palm Island. Along five other men, two women, and a child, all from the same clan, he was 'recruited' by Robert A. Cunningham from Barnum and Bailey's circus: it is unclear how forceful the recruiting process was.

'Tambo' died roughly twelve months after leaving Australia, possibly of pneumonia or tuberculosis. He was not repatriated to Palm Island until 1994.

The Australian Geographic also notes that 'Tambo' was the name by which he was known in the circus.

Please note: the Australian Geographic article listed below includes a photograph said to be of 'Tambo' and his contemporaries.
