BiographyHistory

The British Science Fiction Book Club was established in 1953 by Herbert Jones, then an employee of publishers Sidgwick and Jackson. The SFBC (UK) issued its first book in January 1953 (around the same time that Doubleday published its first US Science Fiction Book Club novel), and in one form or another carried on until the end of 1982. From its beginnings the Club provided an easy way for science fiction fans to purchase comparatively affordable and well-made hardback books. Many British libraries were members also. At the time of its demise the Club was being run by publishers David and Charles.
