In 2002, as a Year 11 student at Shenton College in Western Australia, Julian Polain was an inaugural winner of a Poets Union Australian Youth and Young Poets Fellowship. As part of the award he travelled to Sydney to recite his work at the Australian Poetry Festival in Balmain and his poetry was published in Five Bells, the journal of the Poets' Union.
