As well as co-authoring children's books with Jim Howes and Ninon Phillips (as Ninon, Neil and Jim), photographer Neil McLeod has contributed photographs to a large number of posters and books for adults on various Australian subjects, people, locations, flora and fauna, including
Australian Wildlife (circa 1979), a series of books on Australian zoos and conservation parks (1980-1982),
Australia's Great Barrier Reef (1983),
Wilderness Tasmania (1983) and
Australian Mammals (1984). His photographs have also appeared in books for children written by other authors, including
Mariette Buckle,
Esta De Fossard and
Denise Burt. He has also produced and contributed to educational material (text, photographs, slides and video), beginning with
Nocturnal Animals (a series of slides, circa 1975) and including, amongst at least 23 works,
Koalas (slides, circa 1979),
B. H. P. (slides, 1981),
Camouflage : Colour and Pattern in Animals (slides and text, 1981) and
Surf Lifesaving (video, 1985). A collector and curator of Aboriginal art and artefacts, he has supplied photography for numerous books on Aboriginal art and culture, and in 2001 he donated his collection of over 300 Aboriginal paintings, Oceanic works from Papua and New Guinea, drawings, artefacts and photographic slides to the Shire of Yarra Ranges (Burrinja Gallery). As a partner in Door / McLeod Publishing he has also helped produce a number of books on Australian horses.
