Notes

  • Author note (appended to the manuscript copy of the poem Panegyric on an Eminent Artist): I sign Timon to my little productions, expressive of a detestation of Vice.
[The pseudonymn refers to the main character of Shakespeare's play Timon of Athens, in turn based on a figure from Plutarch's Lives. In the Shakespeare play, Timon is initially a generous character, but following backruptcy, he becomes bitter and misanthropic.]
