Michelle Marquardt graduated from Sydney University with a degree in veterinary science, and has lived and worked in the United Kingdom. Her first novel, Blue Silence, won the 2000 George Turner Prize and was short listed for both the Aurealis and Ditmar Awards. Her short stories have been published in the anthologies Passing Strange (2002) and Daikaiju: Giant Monster Tales (2005). Since 2005, Marquardt has been co-editor of The Year's Best Australian SF and Fantasy (with Bill Congreve, q.v.).
As a practicing veterinarian, Dr Marquardt worked for many years at Sydney Animal Hospitals Newtown and in 2006 was admitted to the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in Small Animal Medicine. She has a particular interest in pocket pets: rabbits, rodents, and ferrets.
